Induction Department Supervisor
The Induction Department Supervisor (IDS) is responsible for oversight of the Thermex Induction department, induction process development, induction coil building, setup development/planning, work quality, and workflow scheduling, induction operator training and oversight. The position is responsible for ensuring equipment is in operating order and proper preventative maintenance is planned and executed, and for troubleshooting unplanned equipment outages in conjunction with the maintenance department and Operations Manager. The IDS is also responsible for supporting the operation/production in the Induction Department and providing vacation coverage for Induction Operators.
The IDS must be focused as the work is very precise, requiring significant accuracy and attention to detail. The work involves R&D time preparing setups for new parts and orders, to expand Thermex’ offering and range of induction hardening capabilities.
- Induction Department Oversight
- Manage scheduling and flow of work to maximize safety, quality, and timeliness of throughput.
- Maintain awareness of workload and required due dates, induction department rush list review.
- Assign specific duties to various staff as required to ensure timely completion of jobs, shop organization, etc.
- Develop strategies to maximize throughput on all lines to improve workflow efficiency and improve turnaround.
- Provide feedback to Customer Care team on changes in due dates and work to accommodate expediting requests as available.
- Provide training and development to all induction operators and trainees and ensure proper oversight of their work.
- Ensure quality testing is completed and within customer specifications. Advise on remedial and corrective actions for out of spec work.
- Process Development
- Provide insight and planning for new and potential work for the induction department. Work with the Customer Care team to plan and quote new processes for Induction Department.
- Develop specialized induction processes/procedures to meet customer requirements and review customer drawings and specifications.
- Build and produce new induction hardening coils, quench options, for new work orders and R&D projects.
- Build and develop new workflows and process instructions for existing or reoccurring work.
- Stay informed as to developments and technology improvements in Induction Hardening and make the case for adopting these at Thermex.
- Identify new/used equipment options in the pursuit of additional revenue/workflow for Thermex. Advise on equipment requirements and modifications.
- Equipment Management and Maintenance

- Ensure equipment, peripherals, and supplies are in working order and schedule/oversee equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Review polymer testing and supply levels.
- Maintain Induction area organization and cleanliness.
- Develop a critical spare parts list for all equipment in the department, and work with the Operations Manager to ensure that a proper inventory of critical spare parts is always maintained.
- Process Parts as Required | Provide Induction Operator Coverage

- Set up machine properly for each specific job before operating equipment.
- Select appropriate coils and proper process parameters. Apply correct set up to ensure part is run through according to pre-established process parameters and practices.
- Read customer drawings and process parts from start to finish in accordance with customer drawings and internal work instruction.
- Review and plan orders before processing. Ensure complete understanding of specialized and more difficult processing requests. Carefully review customer drawings and seek clarification, as well as clarification from the lab before operating equipment. Significant preparation time is required to ensure concise and accurate processing.
- Perform tempering procedures prior to hardness testing as outlined in the Traveler (work instruction).
- Hardness test parts and coupons as required.
- Ensure parts are tagged, properly stored, ensure protection and storage of customer parts.
- Operate hoist and forklift equipment to transfer loads for processing steps. Training to be reviewed in house for overhead lift use.
- Properly communicate status of all in-process jobs to oncoming shift, in writing.
- Other projects or special duties as required.
